Our Governing Body at The Mill Academy
Download our Governor Handbook for an overview of the Governing Body and being a Governor at The Mill Academy.
All schools in England have a Governing Body which is responsible for overseeing many of the strategic decisions of the school. A key role is to act as a ‘critical friend’: to support, to challenge, to ask questions, ultimately to represent the school community.
The Governing Body works in close partnership with the Headteacher, staff and the Trust. Whilst the Headteacher is, of course, responsible for the day to day running of the school, the governors are involved with such things as staffing, curriculum, school buildings and finance. It ensures the school functions well and maintains the proper range of academic and social objectives.
Who are we?
The Governing Body consists of:
Mrs Tamara Gulliver – Headteacher
Mrs Sue Williams – Chair person
Mrs Louise Wylie – Trust Governor
Mrs Helen Davison – Parent Governor
Miss Emma Speed – Parent Governor
The Mill Membership
The standard term of office is 4 years. The chair and vice-chair are elected annually at the first meeting of the academic year.
The chair of governors is Mrs Sue Williams, who can be contacted via the school office of directly via e-mail at firstname.lastname@example.org
The Governing Body meets four times each year. Much of the work of the Governing Body is done by committees which meet at least every term (three times a year). Here at The Mill Academy we have the following committees:
Attainment and Performance Committee
Maths and Literacy Committee
EYFS and Safeguarding Committee
Finance and General Committee
A message from the Chair
I am a retired Primary Headteacher having taught in Barnsley schools for 35 years. I retired four years ago and this enabled me to have time to contribute to the role of Governor. I am now in my third year as a Governor at The Mill Academy and have just begun my second year in the role of Chair.
My family and I have always lived in the Barnsley area; I have a son and a daughter and I have two granddaughters who attend a local Primary school. I take my Granddaughters to school and collect them at the end of each day which gives me a great insight into life for Primary children and their parents.
In my role as Governor I regularly make visits to school which provide me with opportunities to speak to pupils and staff and to experience first-hand daily life at The Mill Academy. I am always impressed by the achievements of the children and the commitment of Mrs. Gulliver and her staff. It is a pleasure to be associated with the school.
I thoroughly enjoy working with the team at The Mill, who are all dedicated to ensuring that the school is the best it can be, and the children are happy, safe and enthusiastic learners. As well as visiting the school during the school day, the members of the Governing Body attend meetings after school. We work in partnership with Mrs. Gulliver and all staff to raise the educational achievement, attainment and progress of all its pupils and ensure the safeguarding of all pupils and staff.
